Turrill 'Artweeks and Beyond' Exhibition

The Artweeks exhibition at the Turrill Garden, that runs until 6th June, is a delight with a collection of works in different media: ceramics – pottery and sculpture – glass. stoneware and wood. There is even a mixed media work, including copper pipes and a tap, that is amusing, ingenious and metaphorical, “Bucket” by Tony and Yolande Wyer, based on the folksong “There’s a hole in my bucket.” This large and undefinable work is a comment on the money-making enterprises that result in the pollution of our rivers but it’s also a very funny commentary on Henry and Liza.

This is a very rich exhibition of imaginative and beautiful works, most of which will enhance any garden or patio. There are wonderfully glazed pots, notably Paul Drew’s strong earthy colours, mostly matt glazed but one lovely piece entitled “Urchin-based form“ with a manganese and green glaze. Jon Earney has provided three pieces; two of which are made of Carrara marble, both black and white, and the third of slate.

Many works of glass by Pip Stacey are dotted about this exhibition,

adding bright light, colour , texture and pattern.

There is also clay and wood sculpture to please those who prefer figurative work: Ellis Stacey’s figurines in oak, Isabel Knowland’s “Angel on the Rock” and “Dancers” and Paul Drew’s wonderful “Neolithic Female.”

This is a selling exhibition with amazingly reasonable prices. Now that summer is coming and more time will be spent in gardens, perhaps even Henry and Liza will find a home in one of them.
